Rulers of the Hapes Consortium

Hapes Consortium is an absolute monarchy, ruled in the modern era by its Sovereign - King, Rai`ix Chume - with the supremacy of the Crown recognized and enshrined within the kingdom's constitution.

For the past half a decade, since the unification of the Consortium at the end of the Hapan Civil War, post-war kings have had a tradition of choosing an established career politician of noble heritage to succeed them, casting aside the feudal traditions of powerful noble families vying for favourable position for when the queen mothers of old would pass the throne - peacefully or otherwise - on to their issue or allied noble houses.

The Coming of the Age of Kings

For millennia, the Hapes Consortium was ruled by dynasties of Queen Mothers, styled Ta`a Chume after the woman who ended the dominion of the Lorell Raiders over Hapes. As the Hapan civilization grew within the secluded the Hapes Cluster independent of any foreign influences, so did the power of its monarchs. Revered and idolized by the populace, the status of the monarch reached its pinnacle in the decades prior to the Consortium's Dark Age.

During the Dark Age, Hapan nobility fought for supremacy to determine who the next monarch would be, and the Consortium was plunged in to a bloody civil war that would last over half a century and ravage much of the kingdom. The conflict triggered a stark shift in values and traditions on many Hapan worlds, among other changes paving the way for the Consortium's first male Hapan monarch, Andrew I in 4000.

Andrew's lengthy reign, with focus on the reconstruction of Hapan society, led to commonplace acceptance for male equality across the Consortium. During this era, the Consortium saw partial opening of its borders for the sake of economic recovery, and ancient rivalries between dominant Hapan factions and houses were finally settled. Andrew I was eventually succeeded in 4027 by James I, a distant descendant of the Consortium's third dynasty - the Tini`durans.

James I's decade on the Hapan Throne saw a new golden age for the Hapes Consortium where the government became increasingly involved in the affairs of the Galaxy outside the Hapes Cluster. A rapid militarization and extensive economic boom followed, putting the Consortium among the galaxy's leading governments.

Alexander I came to power in 4037. A conservative Hapan nobleman descended from the Pal`durath dynasty, Alexander set out to bring about a cultural renaissance. The dynasty sought to recapture the past glories and traditions of the Consortium and combine them with the modern Hapan society.

The current Rai`ix Chume, Zayth I assumed the throne in late 4040. His legacy is still being written.

Selection of a Successor

While the Hapan monarchy was originally hereditary, typically favouring the Sovereign's first-born child or first-born female child, this tradition has not been enforced since the reunification in Year -26. In ancient times, dynasties of ruling monarchs were occasionally overthrown or died out, causing the nobility to select a new family to take the Throne.

In modern times, the reigning Sovereign typically selects his or her heir from among the most worthy of senior officials of the Consortium that are of Hapan descent. Hence the heir of the Sovereign may not be a blood relative, though customs of adoption have been common among the nobility and royalty of the Consortium. If a Sovereign dies without an appointed heir, the Council of Lords along with veteran members of the Royal Council select a new Sovereign.

Destined to Serve

Honour the Phoenix

We see through the ages, the distant offspring of suns conquering darkness, carried forth on the sails of time. Yes, we see you too, but skitter along now, sweet thing, savour the ignorance of your existence. Build your edifices if you will to mark your passing, but know that once the gift of creation is spent, you will not outrun us in the darkness. We will sing you a lullaby, and your forever will come to an end.

Praise the Dragon

Bathed in the soft glitter of alabaster and gold, sequestered at the heart of the ancient kingdom, the Hapan King resides on his throne, waiting. He gazes upon eternity, at the entropy dancing at the edge of waning stars, their fiery decay signifying both guidance and hope to untold sparks of life drifting through an ocean of static. He watches as the galaxy dances to a tune no one can hear, for even enlightment is relative, clarity but a soothing lie.

Witness the Hydra

The Age of Kings has been kind to the realm and its people. The fire hatched the phoenix, and was but a tool of the dragon; Peace has endured, but what of the future? The drums of war from the distance are yet but whispers from the dark in the ear of the monarch, gentle reminders of the struggle that persists beyond his domain. With a glimmer of wrath in his eyes, the void resting in his heart, and a hunger to sate, will the end find him still waiting? Worry not, sweet thing, we shall not spoil the suspense for either of you...
