Maires is an aquatic world located in the system by the same name, situated in close proximity of the Vergill and Charubah systems in the Rifle Worlds region. It is the homeworld of the Mairans, a tentacled aquatic race, which was also one of the species that helped establish the Hapes Consortium. With virtually no landmass, save for a few scattered islands, the planet has seen limited efforts at settlement by Hapans.

History

Earliest Records

While the earliest records of the history of Maires have been lost, the Mairans are assumed to be native to the Hapes Cluster. The planet and its natives were capable of space flight even prior to their initial meeting with the Lorell Raiders and had explored parts of the Cluster and even established minor colonies on some worlds. However, due to being an aquatic species, these settlements were severly limited, and the Mairans preferred to stick close to home.

The few records that do exist indicate that the Lorell Raiders came to Maires through the Lorelli Reach and made contact with the Mairans. Historians have theorized that Mairan spacers may have served as guides on the Raiders' ventures deeper in to the Cluster, even as far as Hapes Prime. Even so, the Raiders exploited the Mairans on occasion and also demanded hefty tributes for "protection."

When the females revolted against the Lorell Raider chieftains, the Mairans gave significant aide in the form of ships, equipment and supplies. After the success of the rebellion, Maires became one of the founding states of the Hapes Consortium, enjoying a great deal of autonomy for the benefit of the Mairans.

Age of Queen Mothers

With its newfound states as member-world of the Consortium, Maires enjoyed significant technological advances over the coming centuries, and saw limited involvement from the Hapans. Some Hapans did settle in the system, however, and orbital defenses were built to help fend of pirate raides that plagued the Cluster in its early history.

However, conflicts did arise between Maires and other worlds of the Consortium, particularly Vergill. Being one of the few prominent aquatic worlds of the Cluster, Vergill conglomerates hoped to mine the ocean bottoms, as well as establish kolto farms. This was resisted by the Mairans, resulting in a rivalry between the planets that has endured to this day.

The Tini'duran family was among the Hapan colonists who settled on Maires during this time period. Members of this family served as de facto governors, though with little authority to interfere with the planet's affairs. They did, however, do much to ensure that considerable resources were invested in the defence of the system. In [621]], Lesvith Tini'duran was selected to succeed Kani Arxianic as Queen Mother of the Hapes Consortium. This dynasty, particularly under Queen Mother Tini'duran III did much to increase Hapes Prime's control over the Consortium's member worlds by establishing a formal aristocracy with peerage and holdings and dominion over systems. However, still feeling sympathic about the Mairans, the planet continued to enjoy its old autonomy with minimal interference from local nobility.

By the end of the Antiquity Era and the death of their reigning Queen Mother in 1163, the dynasty reliniquished its claim to the Throne and went back to ruling Maires as a Tarii. The Tini'durans continued to foster good relations with the natives in the centuries that followed.
