Selab is one of the five temperate planets of the Mathonore system and likely the most well known of them all. It is considered the cultural capital of the Hapes Consortium due to the ancient history of the capital city Xalia and also since the planet is home to the Tree of Wisdom. The Palace of Qedal in Xalia is used as a secondary headquarters for the Ministry of Culture.

History

Selab was discovered along with the rest of the Mathonore system in 361 and colonised in 362 by the Raqill family, a major owner of the Keltros Company which administrated colonies for the expanding Hapes Consortium. It became a self-sufficient colony in contest with the more successful Charlyk, which was made the de facto capital planet of the system. Selab was used to develop large farms of Tzimernut and Tik trees from Hapes Prime and most of the planet's export income derived from this industry. The discovery of the Trees of Wisdom and the effect of the Lasarla fruit, the popularity of the planet increased.

When the feudal nobility system was introduced in 702, the planet became the dominion of the newly established Tarii House Raquill. Between 702 and 3948, Selab was the centre of what was called the Grand Tarii of Selab which consisted of the planet itself, along with its external territory; the Arxian system. The Grand Tarii of Selab was dissolved when House Tylger took over governance of Arxian in 3948, but House Raquill remained a Tarii family, despite only governing a single planet rather than a system.

The Raquill family maintained governance until 3979 when it took over the Mathonore system and moved to Charlyk. House Qedal took over governance of Selab, though after 3997 the planet went un-governed by any major noble family and the planet came under the direct jurisdiction of the Archon of the Rim Worlds in 4032. Since the prominent return of House Threestars in 4034, Selab's status has been elevated to the capital of the Mathonore system.

Profile

Governance

The planet is governed by the Archon of the Rim Worlds and is home to a number of departments and institutions subordinate of the Ministry of Culture. Recently House Threestars took over control of the Mathonore system and Selab has since become the capital of the system. The capital city Xalia and the Palace of Qedal is home to the noble family, the Archon's staff as well as Ministry of Culture personnel.

The Ministry of Culture has special interest in the planet due to the cultural heritage plants known as the Trees of Wisdom as well as the prestigious Royal University of Selab.

Commerce & Industry

The majority of Selab's income stems from the sale of Tzimernut and Tik lumber to other worlds of the Hapes Consortium. While Trees of Wisdom make popular gifts, few can afford the rare trees which require a massive amount of care and trimming. The production of alcohol for export was attempted in the past, but was never particularly successful.

The Royal University of Selab is known as a typical grooming establishment for future politicians and nobles of the Hapes Consortium and has historically always attracted some of the wealthiest young women and men of the Hapes Cluster. The Tini'duranist movement had a large following on the planet during the Phoenix Age, partially thanks to the university.

Terrain & Provinces

The planet is divided in to six continents; two major ones along with four minor. The capital city Xalia lies on the north-eastern continent which goes by the same name. Xalia is famous for its traditional architecture which incorporates the styles of both the First and Second Antiquity Eras along with its many canals.

The south-western continent is known as Lasarla and is home to the largest Wisdom Park. The forest terrain of the continent is largely massive Tik farms.

Flora & Fauna

While Tzimernut and Tik trees imported from Hapes Prime dominate many of the planet's continents and provinces, the dryer regions are home to the more unusual Selab Trees of Wisdom. The Wisdom Park reservations are used to grow the trees which mainly grow in the drier regions of the planet.

While large quantities of the trees were destroyed during bombardments of Selab during the Hapan civil war, the amount of trees has returned to its pre-conflict numbers following careful administration and efforts by the Ministry of Culture in recent years. All research in to the true nature of the Lasarla fruit and its effects have been forbidden. The trees remain a popular, yet expensive and exclusive gift given by the Hapes Consortium's wealthier individuals.
