Archon

An Archon is a type of regional governor within the Hapes Consortium. Today the Consortium has one Archon per major region (Rifle Worlds, Rim Worlds, Interior). Duties of the Archons include the administration of local cities and outposts as well as maintaining good relations and flow of dialog between all parties operating within their region.

History

The Archons were historically much more influencial than they are in the present day Hapes Consortium. They were the representatives of the peoples of the Consortium, meaning primarily the commoner population. As the nobility had the most influence and for the most part could rule their territories as they wished, the Archons represented the interests of the population in Lorell Hall. They also had a major influence over the development of local economies within their respective regions, trying to further the interests of companies which were not owned by the noble houses of the Hapes Consortium.

The Archons were typically appointed by the Queen-Mother or in some cases elected by the local populations. They were rarely nobility as the point of the position was to maintain the interests of the commoners. While the monarchs and nobility of the Hapes Consortium ruled as they wished, they recognized that a content and happy population was a loyal population. Archons were often called upon to mediate in disputes between smaller local governments, corporations, species and the like.

The planet Vergill in the Hapan system had a commoner government leader who also held the title Archon.

The title and position was abolished between 4000 and 4032, following the centralisation of power and jurisdiction within the Hapes Consortium during the reign of both King Andrew and King James.

Present Day

The position was reinstated in 4032 as the Royal Council looked at the possibility of instating something more permanent than local planetary governors. Due to the historical importance of the Archons, the titles were made part of the Hapan hierarchy once again, seperate of the government's standard rank structure. It is important to note that Archon is a title which can be held by anyone, rather than being a rank at a set level in the hierarchy.

Three Archons are in office at all times, administrating the Rifle Worlds, Rim Worlds and Interior regions. The capitals of these regions are Lorell, Dreena and Gormoth respectively.

Duties of the Archons include:

• Co-ordinating regional efforts by the government with local Royal Hapan Armed Forces.
• Co-ordinating regional efforts by the government with local nobility.
• Co-ordinating regional efforts by nationalised corporations with local nobility and Royal Hapan Armed Forces.
• Maintaining local Hapan cities and outposts.
• Administrating local construction projects with the Ministry of Industry.
